The Washington Capitals have locked up a key part of their defence corps as Tom Poti has signed a two-year extension with the team worth $5.75 million.
Poti will earn $3 million in the first year of the contract and $2.75 million in the second. The extension will kick in following this season. Poti is in the final year of his old deal that will see him earn $3.5 million.
With the rebuild in Long Island well underway, the New York Islanders announced Tuesday that they had agreed to terms with Nino Niederreiter on a three year entry-level contract.
Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - The Carolina Hurricanes have signed center Jeff Skinner to a three-year, entry-level contract. Skinner was the seventh overall pick of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He will be paid $810,000 per season at the NHL level or $67,500 per year at the minor league level, and also received a $270,000 signing bonus.

The Wade Redden era in New York has come to an end.
The Rangers assigned the 33-year old defenceman to the Hartford Wolf Pack on Monday.
Redden, who signed a six-year, $39 millioon free-agent contract in July 2008, never panned out for the Rangers, posting five goals and 35 assists in 156 regular season games with the team.
Redden has $23 million and four years remaining on his contract.
The move will allow the Rangers to bury Redden's cap hit and give them some breathing room under the $59.4 million salary cap.
According to the New York Post, if Redden's agent Don Meehan has been given permission by the club to make a deal with a European club if Redden doesn't want to play in the AHL.

So ist es. Und der Fehler hier liegt auch nicht bei Redden, sondern eher bei den Rangers, die ihm völlig sinnloser Weise so einen Arsch voll Geld gaben. Erwartungen verglichen mit Leistungen hin oder her- wenn ich einen Spieler so bezahle, dass er die Erwartungen mit seinen Lesitungen kaum erfüllen kann (was bei einem Ü30 Jahre alten Spieler ohnehin schwerer wird), siehts halt fast immer dumm aus, eh?
It appears the Washington Capitals have rid themselves of Michael Nylander's salary.
According to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, the Capitals have loaned Nylander to the Florida Panthers (->Rochester Americans), who will pick up most or all of the 18-year veteran's $3 million contract.
Last year, Nylander to Jokerit-Helsinki of the Finnish League as well as Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League.
The report indicates the 38-year old Nylander will suit up with the Rochester Americans of the AHL until such time he's ready to return to the NHL.
"He's coming here to help our young guys," Panthers assistant general manager Mike Santos told the Democrat and Chronicle. "He's not coming here grumbling. He wants to resurrect his career for one more shot."
The Edmonton Oilers have placed defenceman Sheldon Souray and goaltender Martin Gerber on waivers. The other 29 NHL teams have until noon ET on Friday to put in a claim for either player. If that doesn't happen, the Oilers have the option to send the veterans to AHL Oklahoma City.
